Do not hesitate to give the light box a try. I was always so depressed as soon as the fall came and it would continue until it was lighter in the morning and spring. Then I would be bounding around with much energy–like a switch had been turned on. This finally came to a head the winter of 1997 when, after taking Prozac for awhile, I decided to pay big bucks ($400.00) at that time for a light box. I was reading info on SAD and–well I have it. I live in NOrthern Illlinois. Now, I got a 10,000 lux box from Appollo company and started that very next morning on a 30 minute dose while I had my morning coffee and paper. I did not look directly at it, but just read with it on the side table pointing at me. (At that time, they were pretty large and now they have compacted them).

By the end of the week, my husband asked who this different person (ME!!) was. No lie. It was like 2 tiny blackout shades behind my eye balls “rolled up” suddenly and I was energetic, slept better, cheerful, no brain fog, less appetite and all the stuff I felt when spring arrived. I had been walking everyday, but this was incredible for me.

I do not use it any more. I am 65 YO woman and in my reading, I see that as we get older, we don’t maybe need the supplementation anymore In any case, I am Paleo, get exercise and work everyday and get out and try to get VIT D either in supplements or getting outside. Everyone will react differently, but I really believe you should try this. Most boxes have a 30 day guarantee and by then you will know if it works and if it doesn’t send it back. The Appollo Company even wired a travel model for me for European electricity when I went to Ireland for a month and then wired it back to US for free (just shipping). I have since sold both units.

I do feel a bit down in the AM during the winter, but rebound after coffee and moving around. But this box was a true lifesaver in so many ways–the biggest I got off the anti-depressents and never went back.

GOOD LUCK! Love the podcast and look forward to hearing both you guys. My daughter lived in Pittsburgh for a couple of years and I loved visiting. We ice skated downtown one Christmas (well, I held onto the railing anyway). I wish they still lived there or Philly where they went next. Now they live on Long Island and its difficult to get around from there–Pittsburgh and especially Philly were easy to navigate.

Good, let us know how you make out with it. When I got the light back in the late 90’s they never mentioned “blue light” only the light measurement of lux. But whatever it was, it worked.

Do computers count as blue light?

good point, there is definitely blue light from your computer. Less intense of course, but if you are staring at it all day I assume it should have similar effects.

The links to the cholesterol studies you talked about, are you posting them in a separate blog post or were they supposed to be in this podcast roundup? I’d like to read them.
